hotel news: green key eco-rating

The Palms Hotel & Spa is pleased to announce that it has achieved a 3 Green Key rating through the Green Key Eco-Rating Program.  A 3 Green Key rating demonstrates that The Palms Hotel & Spa has taken significant steps to protect the environment. Strong environmental programs, best management practices, training programs, and engineering solutions have been implemented which have benefited the environment and the local community.

The Palms Hotel & Spa, independently owned by the Krause family, truly embraces sustainability and environmental responsibility. In 2009, the historic Art Deco hotel underwent a major refurbishment and at this juncture, the owners examined the possibility of implementing new, but cost effective environmentally sound practices throughout the property.  The goal was to capture the family’s personal commitment to the environment and infuse that commitment within the walls and character of The Palms.

Post renovations, the team examined how to best re-position the hotel both internally and externally in order to provide an authentic reflection of the property’s philosophies. A proposal coined Inspired by Nature Program was put into place to assist the hotel’s staff in attaining its goals and future improvements as it relates to sustainability. The mission statement was delivered by the leader of the hotel’s Inspired by Nature Green Team and Director of Brand Development, Tanja Morariu: The Palms Hotel & Spa is our commitment to preserving the environment and caring for the world we live in.

The Palms’ Inspired by Nature program expresses the commitment to preserving the environment and caring for the world we live in. It was created to establish the hotel as a responsible corporate citizen in the Miami Beach community and to promote many environmentally conscious initiatives such as reducing, re-using and recycling and always acting with the environment in mind amongst staff and residents alike. Moreover, The Palms is one of only 14 Miami Beach hotels to be Florida Green Lodging accredited, certifying that the hotel is committed to protecting Florid

a’s natural resources.

In November 2011 The Palms Hotel & Spa also won the Sustainable South Florida Awards in the Green Practices category. This award is presented by the Miami Chamber of Commerce to honor South Florida businesses that have made significant contributions to sustainability making an impact in the community with the development of sustainable practices, products or services.

The next steps are manifold: Determine yearly quantifiable goals and targets in terms of KW and water consumption reduction; establishing benchmarks to better evaluate improvements; secure additional hospitality accreditations; continue and enhance internal green training programs, establish a sub-team of key line-level green ambassadors.

“Every day we strive to become greener, constantly reminding our team members to act with the environment in mind,” said Morariu. “The goal is to challenge the status quo to find better solutions. This program is a work-in-progress, evolving and improving on a daily basis.”
